A Sudbury optician is planning for his ten-day trip to Kenya. His luggage will be packed with 1,500 pairs of eyeglasses. While in Kenya, he will be doing vision assessments and passing out glasses to those who need them, including at an orphanage in Nairobi. Volunteering is not a new thing for Dr. Bryan Todd. He took a similar trip to Belize in 2004 and Malawi in 2016. He says for those living in poverty, being able to see makes a dramatic difference. Todd says when people put on a pair of glasses for the first time and they can see clearly, it gives them an opportunity to make a better life. He and another optician will be using a portable refracting unit attached to an iPhone to determine the patient’s prescription. They will try and find the closest match from the selection of eyeglasses they have brought with them. Residents from Sudbury donated all of the glasses. Dr. Todd says the demand for vision health is so high in these low economy communities, and even when working 12-hour days, it barely scratches the surface of the need. He said, “You can start at 7 o’clock in the morning and you’ve got a hundred people already lined up. And then you can look out at 12 o’clock in the afternoon and there are two hundred people.” It is a non-stop process and after spending two weeks, you still aren’t able to catch up to the need.
