Brazilian Cowboy Rode Horse from Alaska to Alberta
A Brazilian cowboy, Filipe Masetti Leite, age 33, grew up in Canada and now dreams of becoming a Canadian citizen. He just finished a 3,400-kilometer trip by horse from Alaska to Calgary, Alberta. He encountered bears, bugs, bad weather, and buffalo on his long trek.
The 2020 Calgary Stampede was set to start the same day he finished his trip, but was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even though the event was canceled, Masetti Leite was named the official parade marshal. A Journey
Masetti Leite said he avoided major highways since setting out from Anchorage in May 2019 and switched riding between two horses, Smoky and Mack. This isn’t his first-time riding as a long rider, a name used for an equestrian who has traveled over 1,600 continuous kilometers in a single trip. He rode over 16,000 kilometers riding from Calgary to his parent’s home in Sao Paulo (Brazil) between 2012 to 2014.
He took another trip in 2016, riding 7,350 kilometers from Brazil to Patagonia. Masetti Leite moved with his family to Calgary at the age of nine, and later grew up in Toronto.
