Foreign Student Glad to Receive Canadian Citizenship
Diana Akilian was born in Armenia, grew up in Kuwait, studied in Lebanon, then settled in New Brunswick
She studied at Mount Allison University and Oulton College in Moncton. She now owns a garage in Amherst and works in auto sales. After living in Canada since 2008, she was excited to become a Canadian citizen, but received the disappointing news that the in-person ceremony was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was her dream to have a physical ceremony and have her family join her and watch. Although it was not the ceremony she planned, via Zoom, she took her oath of Canadian citizenship, with her family watching at home. She said it still feels like she is dreaming.
Akilian speaks Arabic, Armenian, and English and now has a goal to learn French. She is also planning to finish her studies and receive a Bachelor of Commerce at Mount Allison University. For right now she is celebrating a milestone in an unconventional way, but it is something she will cherish forever. Just as Akilian has felt at home in Canada, you can as well.
